    INSPIRATION FOR MISTLETOE MAGIC

mmag 2011 blck n red As I've worked with this pattern it's becoming my new favorite. I love the movement across the top of the quilt and the secondary patterns created when the blocks are placed side-by-side. If you squint you will see whirling circles rather than blocks in a row. Isn't that cool! I love it when simple piecing gives you surprised like that.

My quilting friends back in Oregon have been getting together for our annual Christmas "mystery" quilting party for more than 10 years now and most agree, enough with the quilting mysteries. So I decided to do a complete unveiling before we even get started this year. That should help with fabric selection.

Another first this year is my posting the pattern on my blog for "all the world" to celebrate the season with a fun quilt project. Enjoy and leave some love as you collect each installment over the next few weeks.

I always love crashing through all my scraps and putting them together in blocks that work. That challenge of working with spontenaity - no looking or peeking allowed. Just pull the scraps out of the bag and put the blocks together. Doesn't this look like shimmering jewels?

I may have mentioned before that I'm using scrappy red for my quilt. All of my blocks will be different shades of red with a common background. But check out another possibility. Most of us are in love with the dream of having a Christmas quilt on every bed all through the month of December. Here's a different take on the same pattern - just a few tweaks here and there make it a completely different quilt.

My friend Jan is in love with the color blue. In fact she has claimed my powder bathroom (which is done in all different shades of teal) as her very own. LOL So I needed to be sure and do a blue mock-up for her so she could have an idea what her completed quilt might look like. This one is done with only three fabrics - the background, a main fabric and then a contrast fabric to help keep visual interest and movement happening across the quilt top.

So, did you remember to squint and see the circles? Check out the spinning action and while you're at it drop me a line with an idea for a name. Poor nameless pattern. Another designer friend and I agree. Coming up with names for our patterns is almost harder than writing the pattern. Any and all suggestions considered and appreciated.
